On 7th April, 1917, in preparation for there involvement in the Battle of Arras which began two days later, the 5th London battalion of 169 Brigade, 56th Division moved to old British trenches south of Agny. When they reached the junction of the Arras-Doullens road with the Achicourt road, a German shell hit the cooker wagon of D Company killing both  horses and two riflemen. One of these riflemen was Alfred Tolhurst.
